CHLORINE DIOXIDE GENERATION

Chlorine dioxide has been used in pulp bleaching for many years. Today, with the
requirements for reduction of halogenated compounds in pulp mill effluent, older chlorine
dioxide plants require expansion or refurbishment; at times replacement. A. H. Lundberg,
Inc., supplies complete Mathieson or Solvay process plants or replacement generator
vessels, absorption towers and other system components.

Generators

Titanium generators are supplied to replace existing generators or for new plant
construction. These generators incorporate Lundberg designed top entering spargers and
cooling coils. This design eliminates the bottom entering gas inlets and aloxite discs
commonly used for sparging dilution or reactant gases into the vessel. The elimination
of lead linings and jacketed vessels improves the heat transfer from the reactants and
simplifies construction.

On new construction, the generator vessel can be placed upon a flat and firm foundation.
Removable through flanged nozzles on the top of the vessel, a sparger and cooling coil
assembly can be inspected without draining and/or entering the generator.

Replacement generators can be constructed for installation in the same manner as the
vessel that is to be replaced. The preferred replacement will also incorporate top entering
spargers in order to eliminate the aloxite discs or other bottom entering nozzles.

Absorption Towers

As the capacity of an older plant is increased, the absorption tower can be pushed
beyond capacity. The tower diameter and packing are the critical design features of
absorption towers. Material of construction for the tower is FRP. Packing supplied is
usually ceramic or stoneware.

Storage

Design and supply of chlorine dioxide solution storage tanks is also provide by A. H.
Lundberg, Inc. Modern tank design incorporates a floating fiber glass pad to reduce
surface exposure inside the tank. Also, venting is provided to permit sweep air to carry
chlorine dioxide gas from the tank back to the absorption tower.

Consulting

A. H. Lundberg, Inc. would be pleased to provide the service of a knowledgeable
engineer to assist in the review of chlorine dioxide systems and to work with the mill to
develop plans for upgrading.
